Job Description: Student intern, depending on year in law school, will be able to participate in the day to day life of a Special Assistant Attorney General representing DFCS in Barrow County and Dawson County. Responsibilities include: attending Court hearings, meetings with DFCS, drafting orders and pleadings, interviewing witnesses, and research. Working as a SAAG, the intern will come into contact with other participants in child welfare proceedings, including judges, GALs, CASAs, case managers, service providers, and parents' attorneys. Position is open to rising 2Ls and 3Ls. 3Ls will be certified under the Third Year Practice Act and receive 1-2 cases to prepare as a student attorney. (Students who have already been certified must provide proof of certification.)
Qualities: Intern must be self-sufficient and an independent thinker, but not afraid to ask for help or assistance.  
Other: There is not a main office due to the amount of time spent in court and in travel. Intern must have access to own computer and work space. Office supplies will be provided to the intern and any incurred expenses shall be reimbursed.

Job Description: The intern will be working with 3 juvenile courts in Catoosa, Walker, and Dade Counties. S/he will gain experience by working with court administrators, judges, DFCS, DJJ, district attorney, public defender, SAAG, GAL, and CASA programs. We strive to give the intern a broad picture of the entire juvenile court system.

Job Description: Abused and neglected children with special needs. The Piedmont Judicial Circuit (Banks, Barrow, and Jackson counties) employs two full time attorneys to represent all children in the circuit who are in the custody of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services.  The intern will assist the attorneys on assigned projects in specific cases of child abuse and neglect of children with special needs. The goal is to ensure appropriate placement of children; specifically, that each child is receiving the necessary and recommended specialized medical, psychological and educational services. To ensure the child's needs are met, the intern will learn DFCS policy and how to utilize the Georgia Civil Practice Act, e.g., discovery, motions, and service requirements, and creative methods to negotiate DFCS policy to accomplish the goal. The intern can expect real exposure to the actual practice of federal and state child welfare law and DFCS policy.
Qualities: Interest in and commitment to protection of abused and neglected children, specifically those with special medical and/or psychological needs.
Other: We are one of a few judicial circuits who provide representation to all children in DFCS custody by a senior and associate full time child advocate attorney. Our offices are located in Jefferson, Georgia. We also serve Barrow County (Winder, GA) and Banks County (Homer, GA).

Job Description: The Juvenile Court for the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit seeks to offer a law clerk experience for a law school student who is seriously considering a career in the field of juvenile justice. The successful applicant can expect to frequently attend juvenile court and observe delinquency, deprivation, and termination of parental rights hearings. The intern will be assigned specific legal issues to research arising from current cases before the judge. The intern will also be encouraged to observe one or 2 specific cases from the viewpoint of a judge while observing proceedings from the jury box and then to draft a model order which will then be critiqued by the judge. This learning experience will allow the student to learn how fact-finders view attorneys and witnesses. The student will also be involved in ongoing research on the judge's annual revision of a legal treatise on Georgia juvenile law currently published by Thomson West. The intern will also be offered opportunities to shadow a child advocate, an attorney who represents Child and Family Services, and a DFCS caseworker to better learn how these stakeholders work in the system.
Qualities: The successful applicant will have excellent research and writing skills, have completed the second year of law school, will view the profession of law as more of a calling to serve than as a business for profit, will desire to learn how to apply the skills of a legal education for the strengthening of families and the rehabilitation of parents and children.
Other: The Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit consists of Polk and Haralson Counties in northwest Georgia. It is primarily a rural, but not isolated, area with easy access to the cities of Rome, Carrollton, and Douglasville, all of which offer the typical suburban shopping, dining, and entertainment. These cities would also be good locations for summer housing.
