The Forum and Rally Were a Huge Success!
At a rally held in the capitol rotunda child advocates presented Governor Roy Barnes with an oversized postcard saying "Thank You For Your Support!" for proposing the most generous child welfare package in this states' recent history. The budget is now under consideration by the state legislature. The rally followed an impassioned child welfare advocacy forum at which more than 100 child advocates signed the postcard to the governor. The rally was the January 18, 2001 lead story on GPTV's Lawmakers. GPTV followed up with more in-depth coverage of the forum in their January 19, 2001 program. The forum was also featured on the front page of the Atlanta Constitution, as well as WGCL-TV, and WSB-TV.
Governor Barnes praised our dedication and persistance and asked for our help in moving his CPS initiative through the legistlature. Highlights of the governor's remarks:
- "You have been vocal in your advocacy, and I have listened."
- "It is apparent something is broken. Unfortunately, it's not just in Georgia. We've just been a little more honest about it."
- "I saw a plan worthy of adoption, so worthy I added money to it."
- "I am doing this because it's the right thing to do."
- "One last request: Help me to support this special child welfare initiative through this legislature."
- "With your help, there is nothing we can't do."
The child welfare advocacy forum and rally were hosted by The United Way of Metro Atlanta, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, IBM, The Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic, and The Casey Family Programs.
